Please be in prayer for Chuck Davenport's son-in-law, Gerald. He is currently in the hospital undergoing tests. The doctors right now are saying it is possibly MS. Due to his brain being affected Gerald is unable to work and his license has been taken away.

Freedom Sunday is March 13, 2011

Freedom Sunday is an official Free Methodist justice project, for the sake of the oppressed worldwide, in the name of Jesus. The Board of Bishops goal as a Free Methodist denomination is to engage 1000 churches in the modern abolition movement.

What we want local churches to do:

1. SIGN UP on the NFS website Notforsalecampaign.org as official participants in Freedom Sunday

2. EDUCATE their congregation on today's abolition movement with worship resources for March 13th.

3. GIVE a Freedom Sunday offering.

4. RECRUIT an “abolitionist champion” to keep the issue before the congregation

How will the funds be allocated?

30% - International Child Care Thailand safe house project. This is an already planned project, which needs resources to become a reality. It is directly working with the victims of sex trafficking.

30% - “Slave Free Cities” initiative; Haiti, Turkey / Eastern Europe, U.S. Impoverished countries like Haiti are “hot spots” for human trafficking. We are also wanting to begin abolition work in Turkey and Eastern Europe under the leadership of Jerry Coleman and Dale Woods. Women and children are trafficked from Eastern Europe into the Middle East via Turkey. Here in the U.S., our FM church in Austin, TX has built partnerships between churches, schools, law enforcement, non-profits, business, and government agencies to fight local trafficking. We hope the Austin model will multiply among Free Methodists in other US locales to establish 'slave-free' cities.

30% - Support of FM Abolitionist Missionaries: Kevin Austin, of the Pacific Northwest Conference, former FM missionary to Thailand, is on staff part-time with “Not For Sale” abolitionist non-profit and a “Global Associate” of the PNW Conference. Kevin has opened several doors for the FMC in the anti-human-trafficking movement. He will be a guest chapel speaker at several FM colleges and universities in 2011. Matthew Hansen, of The River Conference, is leading abolitionist partnerships in Haiti, Turkey / Eastern Europe; and is leading the efforts in Austin regarding the “Slave Free City” model.

10% - To support agencies that are engaged in the abolition movement: International Justice Mission and Not For Sale.

Winterfest is happening! The dates are March 4th & 5th, 2011. Again this year Craig's Cruisers will be hosting the majority of the event. Free games, go carts, laser tag, bumper cars, and etc. are all included again. As well as an hour and half of all the Pizza you can eat. The price is $45 per person. (including leaders) This will be for grades 6th thru 12th. We would also like to invite college students if interested (we need minimum of 200 people). We will be having a worship/meeting time before at The Springs Church (Cedar Springs). Below is a link for the registrations forms. The North Michigan Wesleyan Study Course Seminar has released their Spring 2011 course schedule.

You can email Pastor Charlie Bellinger at dchas1@cmsinter.net with questions of clarification regarding exact dates for these classes.

The two courses – Sociology and Psychology are not required classes in the FMC. Certainly they are worthwhile and can be taken to qualify for the elective credit. If your elective credit is met, these classes would not qualify for ministerial assistance.

Registration for these classes is due by January 10, 2011.

Calvin College is sponsoring a lecture series they call “the January Series.” They bring in a vast array of people to give thought provoking presentations, for free, from 12:30 to 1:30 in the afternoon for 15 days. The presenters range in their scope of expertise and experience; all have the capacity to add to the perspective of Christ having a claim on all creation.

If you’re interested in discussion about faith and science – check out presenter Krista Tippett. If you’re interested in the future of the church, Andy Crouch may be of interest. If working in missions is interesting to you, check out Jackson Kaguri, or Nikki Toyama-Szeto. If public policy interests you, Donald Worster, Sajan George, or Neil Conan will be down your alley. The speaker I’m interested in is Cal Ripkin, Jr. In January in Michigan, what better thing to think about than baseball and summer?!

I encourage you to find a way to take in at least one of the presentations as a part of continuing your spiritual formation. The Calvin web site has all the information about where you can take it in, either at Calvin or a satellite venue, or at your home, via podcast.

North Michigan School of Ministry Announces Partnerships

Luke 2.10—I am bringing you good news of great joy . . .

With these words an angel appeared to shepherds out in their fields as the Good Shepherd was born in Bethlehem. As you are making final preparations to celebrate anew His birth with your church and family I hope to bring you good news from the North Michigan School of Ministry.

This fall the School of Ministry has been active establishing partnerships with several organizations who are co-laboring in the task of helping to equip people for ministry, theologically, practically and personally. We are excited that these partnerships, along with the classes offered from our own faculty, will enable all interested persons to partake of more courses on a more frequent basis.

Most of our partners offer courses in the class room environment. These partners include:

• East Michigan Training Institute, of the East Michigan Conference, Free Methodist Church

• North Michigan Wesleyan Study Course, of the North Michigan District, The Wesleyan Church

• FMCNA—J-Term

In the past some of the courses from some of the providers were not fully accepted by Credentialing Services, however this has changed. These partners and their classes are in good standing for credit towards ordination in the Free Methodist Church of North America.

Another partner is a company called Knowledge Elements (KE). KE has a platform that enables us to offer courses on-line and with great frequency. At present we have the following courses available: 4 Bible classes, 1 Theology class, 2 Leadership classes, 1 Worship class, and 1 class for those who would like to teach an on-line course. You can find these classes listed on our web site and listed on the “on-line courses” tab.

All of these partnerships help us in our dream to have well equipped leaders in the North Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church.

While each partner has a unique registration process and a unique cost, the School of Ministry is committed to giving great support to each student. Beginning in January of 2011 a member of the NMISOM Advisory Council will be in contact with every CMCer to inquire about academic goals and assist in helping chart a plan for the year ahead. We will make Tuition Assistance available for courses from all of our partners. The tuition assistance loan-grant will be capped at $50/credit hour. This means that a CMCer wanting to take a course from an outside provider may have to pay part of the cost. We believe all of the partners and courses offer a great value to those preparing for ministry, or those who desire to expand or renew their spirit and/or skills.

We encourage you to check out our web site at nmisom.com. You will see classes that are available from each of our partners, some beginning in January of 2011. A person can begin an on-line course in every month of the year.

One part of our commission that we hope to work on soon is developing a life-long learning lab for Pastors. We recognize that spiritual formation, academic study and practical reflection are components that contribute to active ministry. We hope to begin strategizing how to meet this need at our next meeting. We appreciate your prayers for our Advisory Council (Ron White, Janet White, Andrea Casteel, Thomas Doherty, and Jason Leininger) as we approach this topic.

Introduction to Christian Education

A Free Methodist History and Polity course will be beginning the second weekend of September and continuing through November.

Who should take this class?
This class is designed for those who are in a ministerial track preparing for wither ordination in the Free Methodist Church or Deacon Consecration. It may also be valuable to other lay leaders in the church who wish to strengthen their understanding of the basic tenets of our faith.

Course Description:
"Free Methodist History and Polity" is an overview of the history of the Free Methodist Church and its roots in the Wesleyan revivals. Through this class, you will have a clearer understanding of the Free Methodist Church both past and present. This course is required for Conference Ministerial Candidacy.

Volunteers for Youth Camp & CLC Camp

If you are interested in helping out at either camp, we need you to complete a Manton Youth Camp Volunteer Application which is attached below. This year there is an extra step in being able to help out at these camps. By State Law each individual who helps at camp will be required to go to their local Department of Human Services and request a Central Registry Clearance Form. Complete the form, have it approved, and mail to the appropriate Camp Director. Attached below is the procedure for getting a Central Registry Clearance Form and also the Manton Camp Volunteer Application Form. 2010 Youth Camp & CLC Camp

Now is the time to start thinking about summer camps.

This year the Senior High & Junior High are combining camp (grades 6th-12th). This year's youth camp is called BEYOND from 2 Corinthians 8:3-5 and is June 21-25, 2010.

CLC Camp is for students grades 4th-6th. They will be learning from 2 Timothy 1:7. This year's CLC Camp is called Fear Less and is June 28-July 1, 2010.

The cost for both camps is $145. There is a misprint in the camp brochure...please ignore the typo. If you are a student or have students interested in attending Senior High & Junior High Camp or CLC Camp, please go to the below link and print off a brochure and register.

FM History and Polity Course - Postponed

Due to schedule conflicts and the lack of adequate enrollment the History and Polity Class scheduled to start in April will be postponed to August. Please plan on setting aside the second Friday and Saturday of August, September and October for this class. If you have registered, we will hold your registration and apply it to the fall class. If you would like a refund please request one. I hope with more time for planning that we can alleviate some of the schedule problems that several of you are running into. I do look forward to teaching this class with you and want this to be as positive an experience as possible. The more we have participating the richer the experience will be for all.

Free Methodist History and Polity Course

A Free Methodist History and Polity Course is being offered beginning in April. This course with continue every 2nd Friday night and Saturday through June. Pastor Ron White will be teaching this course at the Stanwood Free Methodist Church at 7486 Stanwood Drive, Stanwood, MI 49346.

Homiletics Course

Beginning in April a Homiletics Course will be offered at the Old Conference Office (Big Rapids, Michigan). Dr. Dan Waite is the instructor and the course will be every second Fridays & Saturdays, April-June. This is a 2 credit course and the cost is $100 for Credit and $50 for Audit.

Who should take this class?
This class is designed for those who are in a ministerial track preparing for either ordination in the Free Methodist Church or Deacon Consecration. It may also be valuable to ordained pastors to update and refresh their preaching skills and those seeking to communicate effectively in a quickly changing world.

Prayer Conference

A prayer conference is going to be held on Friday, March 26 & Saturday, March 27, 2010 at Little Eden in Onekama, Michigan. This Conference includes lodging, meals, care packages to everyone who attends, a speaker, a worship time and door prizes will be awarded. The cost of this event is $110 a couple and $75 a single person.

A Note from the Clementes

Dear Friends,

We have an update regarding our financial note that is listed in this month's Herald.

Today we received word that, although the official figures are not yet completed, the Financial Dept. at FMWM Headquarters believes we will end the year 2009 in the black! Our financial commitments for 2010 are steadily being entered into the Mission Connect system, and it looks as though we will have at least 75% of our budget committed to at this time. In light of these factors (in addition to a clean bill of health for all four family members -- praise God!), we have been cleared to return to the field.

We will fly out of Peoria, IL at 6:30 am Tuesday morning, January 12th. We are scheduled to arrive in Kaohsiung, Taiwan at 9:55 pm Wednesday evening, Jan. 13th. (I believe that is 11:55am Wednesday morning Michigan time.)

Prayer Request from David Clemente

Dear Prayer Partners,

I have a quick prayer request regarding the tragic death of a relative of a staff member of Holy Light Theological Seminary, in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.

Early today, Donghan, a relative of one of the seminary staff member, died. He fell from the 6th floor of the seminary building. Some students and faculty members witnessed the incident. Needless to say, the trauma is still current.

Please pray for the family members of the deceased, brother Donghan. Pray for healing for the traumatized members of the seminary who saw the whole thing.

Dear Friends,

We're almost there. The Golf outing is just weeks away. Got your teams together? Attatched is a registration form. Each team must have one filled out. The Deadline is Aug. 11th. Obviously, we will accept registrations the day of. The important thing that we need to know is the number of golfers. If we don't meet a certain quota by the week of, we will have to cancel the outing. Here's the other info that you might already know.

The date is Saturday August, 22nd @ 9am. It will be held at the Falcon Head golf course in Big Rapids. Cost is only $55 per person for 4 man teams. Here's a reminder of the other details to look forward to.

(*you must pay $3 0 shipping and handling, but it's worth it)

There are 4 hole-in-one prizes
1. $20,000 (that's a comma)

* The usual in game contest with prizes.(longest drive, straightest drive, closest to the pin, etc.)
* The meal following our round of golf.

Mt. Pleasant Community Church is hosting a conference called “Think BIG” – a one day event for children’s ministry volunteers and staff. Saturday, November 14, 8:30 AM – 4 PM.

Greetings!! Once again this year the Book of Reports 2009 are now available here online!

We ask that all pastors, delegates, retired pastors, please take a moment to download this document and print it. The North Michigan Conference will only be providing a limited number of copies on the campgrounds. Those with internet access, please come with a copy in hand. Our list of appointments will be handed out at the end of camp, along with the superintendent's annual State of the Work.

This year you have the opportunity to make your Book of Reports 2009 color coded when you print them (this is your choice). Six title pages have been inserted to separate each topic; therefore you are able to print onto colored paper. As listed below...

INDEX (page 3) - Red paper
LEADERSHIP TEAM (page 18) - Green paper
FINANCE TEAM (page 33) - Purple paper
MANTON CHRISTIAN CAMP (page 48) - Orange paper
INSTITUTIONAL REPORTS (page 52) - Yellow paper

If you have access to a colored printer, pages 2, 14-15, & 61 all have color. However, these pages print fine in black and white.

5th Annual Golf Scramble

Below is a link to the Golf Scramble Poster. Please print off as many as you need and display them in your churches, businesses, etc. We want you to help us get the word out. There are Hole-in-One Prizes such as $20,000, $500 Visa Card and more. We need four person teams. The deadline to register your team for this event is August 11, 2009. If you are unable to attend or do not know how to golf, that is okay. We still have a way you can get involved by sponsoring a hole for $50. It does not matter if you are an individual, church, or business, please help sponsor this event. All check's can be made out to Manton Christian Camp and send to Sean Pearson PO Box 350, Lakeview, MI 48850. If they have questions they can contact me at 989-352-6836. Thanks.

News Items from the Central Michigan Free Methodist Church

Friday night there is a concert at the Breslin Center on the campuse of Michigan State University, called the Rock and Worship Roadshow. It features Mercy Me, Jeremy Camp, 10th Ave North, & Addison Roads. Cost for the concert is $10 at the door. Stephanie Brewster is willing to organize a group to go. You can contact her at steph_penguin_2003@hotmail.com. Plans are to meet at the church at 3:30 and be on the road by 4. Email or call Stephanie if you have further questions.

This Saturday – Jan Heugel invites the ladies (bring a friend with you too) to the FLC for a time of fellowship and scrap booking. Bring some of the things you’ve been working on at home, learn from others and show off your beautiful masterpieces! It begins at 5 PM and lasts until 9 PM. The Radiant Bride Revival Brochure is now available. This event is scheduled for May 29th-31st, 2009 at the Little Eden Retreat Center in Onekama, Michigan.
